Early Experience:

David’s international experience began in 1964 with a summer program scholarship to France with The Experiment in International Living.  His first international employment began in 1966 as director of the Men’s International House at The Ohio State University, where he also taught comparative literature.  He then interrupted his graduate studies to teach English as a Foreign Language with the Peace Corps in Morocco, where he wrote the national English exam for Islamic school students in 1967.  During those years his daily languages were Moroccan Arabic and French.  David then served as a trainer for new Peace Corps volunteers beginning in 1968 before returning to Ohio State, where he resumed administrative work and completed his master’s degree with a focus on cross-cultural communication.

Marquette University Development:

David joined Marquette University in 1971 as an administrator with several responsibilities including cross-cultural advising.  There he envisioned and implemented in 1975 what was perhaps the first functionally integrated university international office in the nation.  As director David led the development of policies, procedures, and resources for student and university legal compliances, cross-cultural advising, English language study, student insurance administration, International Center facilities and activities, undergraduate international student recruitment and admissions, and liaison with other university departments.  International enrollments grew to more than 600 students per year from over eighty countries.  The synergies which emerged from the integration of those functions and the ongoing adaptations to change during three decades of development afforded David and others who worked in that environment an unusually rich and balanced comprehension of the international education paradigm.

Professional Involvement:

David has served in many positions within NAFSA: Association of International Educators, including cycles as Chair of Wisconsin NAFSA and as Chair of NAFSA Region V, consisting of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan.  He has presented dozens of speeches and workshops for NAFSA, for the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), and for other groups engaged in higher education.  He is also a member of the European Association for International Education.

State Department Programs:

In addition, David has presented many sessions overseas at workshops sponsored by the United States Department of State for its government-related education advisors serving prospective students in Western and Eastern Europe, in the Middle East and North Africa, in South Asia, and in the nations of the former Soviet Union.  David has presented these sessions in Berlin, Zagreb, Budapest, Nicosia, Ankara, and New Delhi for advisors from over forty countries.

Subject Areas:

Most of David’s presentations have focused on ethical advising, international student recruitment and admissions, United States government regulations, cross-cultural orientation and adaptation, the dynamics and benefits of international education, and international education administration.  More specific information about David’s presentations is available upon request.
